Councillor Sarkis Yedelian awarded Order of Australia Medal (OAM)

On Australia Day, 26 January 2009, Mr Yedelian, Deputy Mayor of Ryde, was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the General Division, 'for service to the Armenian community through the promotion and development of multicultural integration initiatives, and to local government.'

“I'm extremely humbled and proud to receive this award. The significance of receiving this award on Australia Day is even more so magnified.  This year marks the thirtieth year, this great country first welcomed me with open arms.  I'm extremely proud to be Australian."

"We all have a part to play in helping each other and the greater Australian community prosper. We should share this responsibility and engage in our local communities as citizens who would like to make a difference.  There is so much we can do. It’s an honour to be recognised and I am sure this will only make me work even harder for the community. This award goes to my family, friends and the community, who have always been there to support and encourage me along the way.”

Mr Yedelian is currently Ryde City Council's Deputy Mayor.  He was the first councillor of Armenian ancestry, elected to Ryde Council in March 2004. In September 2008, he was re-elected for another term of 4 years.

Mr Yedelian migrated to Australia from Lebanon in 1979, and studied electronic engineering. In 1980, he was a founding member of 'Armenia' monthly (now weekly) magazine, and for many years served on its editorial board.  In 1983 he founded the Armenian Community radio program 'Voice of Sartarabat' via 2NSB-FM Community Radio, and was program Director for several years. From 1994 to 2004, Mr Yedelian was founding and board member one of Australia’s first Community television services, “Community TV Sydney”.  In 1994 he founded the first Armenian Community TV organisation 'Armenian TV Sydney Inc' and is still President of the Association. He has also been an active member of Armenian National Committee of Australia.  He is self-employed, and has his own electronic service business. He is active in Armenian and wider Australian community life.  In 2005, with his initiation and in partnership with local businesses and Ryde Council, 'Ryde Multicultural Centre Inc' was formed. The centre caters to the needs of multicultural communities of Ryde.  He currently is the centre's President.

17 May 2010   Independent Councillor, Sarkis Yedelian OAM, has joined the Liberal Party

Former Ryde Independent Councillor, Sarkis Yedelian OAM, has joined the Liberal Party

in a move he says is aimed at fighting the State Labor Government’s interference and

overriding of Local Government authority.

“Quite frankly, I am sick of this NSW Labor Government doing things that are hurting our

community and its residents. Ryde has been targeted using draconian State Labor

planning legislation that ignores the fair application of development regulations designed to

protect our community standards,” Mr Yedelian said.

He cited issues with inappropriate high density social housing developments in low density

suburbs approved without council consent, boarding house legislation that ignores local

residents, use of Labor’s 3A legislation to build massive over-developments such as unit

towers at West Ryde and the rehab centre at Putney that overrode council regulations.

“I have seen the fight taken up by Ryde Liberal councillors, Bill Pickering, Artin Etmekdjian

and Roy Maggio, to look after our people on these and many other matters. They have a

real conviction and work tirelessly for the community. They also represent a political party

that has promised to return authority to Local Government and local residents.”

Councillor Yedelian OAM was unanimously admitted to the ranks of the Liberal Party with

strong support from Ryde Liberal councillors, local State Liberal MPs and other Party

representatives at a weekend meeting of the State Executive Council of the Liberal Party.

His move to the Liberal Party returns balance to Ryde City Council with four Liberals, four

Independents and four Labor councillors, following the defection from the Liberal Party of

Clr Vic Tagg late last year after failing to secure support for a second term as Mayor. Clr

Tagg’s vote then gave Ryde its first-ever Labor Mayor following a draw out of the hat.

Clr Yedelian said he was indebted to Clr Ivan Petch. Both ran in the same independent

team at the last council elections.

“Clr Petch and I are good friends, and he understands my decision to join the Liberal

Party. The local government landscape has changed forever because it has been so

politicised by State Labor through excessive interference in local planning matters and

ignoring the concerns of our residents. The only effective way to combat this is by joining

the team whose Party will return authority to local government and will listen to the voice of

the community.”

90th Anniversary of Armenian Genocide

RYDE COMMEMORATES 90th ANNIVERSARY ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

 For the first time, an Australian Council yesterday officially recognised the Armenian Genocide of 1915, and called on the Commonwealth Government to do the same, Independent Ryde City Councillor, Sarkis Yedelian announced today.  In 1915, the first genocide of the twentieth century took place, which led to the annihilation of 1.5 million men, women and children.

"As the first Australian Councillor of Armenian ancestry, and a son of survivor of the Armenian Genocide, I feel honoured to have moved this motion,” Clr Yedelian said.

 “The motion ensures that crimes committed in the past are never forgotten, and that we do all we can to prevent similar crimes against humanity.

“It is fitting that Ryde Council has added its name to the growing list of national, state and municipal bodies that have reaffirmed the Armenian genocide worldwide.

Councils in Canada, France, Italy, and the United States have also passed motions on the Armenian genocide

In 1997, the NSW Parliament formally recognised the Armenian genocide and in the following year passed a motion to erect a memorial in the NSW Parliamentary precinct in memory of the victims of the Armenian genocide.

 The motion was passed in the presence of the Armenian Australian community, including His Eminence Archbishop Aghan Baliozian, Primate of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

The motion was seconded by Clr Ivan Petch. Mayor Perram and Clr Campbell also spoke in favour of the motion.

 According to the 2001 Census, 94,478 people live in Ryde City Council located in Sydney’s north-west, and has the largest concentration of Armenian community anywhere in Sydney.

Ryde City Council is located in the Federal electorate of Bennelong, which is represented by the Prime Minister, Mr John Howard.

Yesterday evening Ryde City Council unanimously passed the following motion:

That this Council:

(1)    acknowledges  this year as marking the occasion of the 90th anniversary commemoration of the Genocide of the Armenians perpetrated  by the then Ottoman Government between the years 1915-1922;

(2)    joins with the Armenian community of Ryde in  honouring the memory of  the 1.5 million men, women and children who died in  the first genocide of  the twentieth century;

(3)    recognises 24 April every year as a day of  remembrance of the Armenian genocide;

(4)    condemns  the genocide of the Armenians and all other acts of genocide committed as the  ultimate act of racial, religious and cultural intolerance;

(5)    calls on the Commonwealth Government to  officially condemn:

(i)        the  genocide of the Armenians

(ii)       any attempt to deny such crimes against humanity.

RYDE:  This evening Ryde City Council unanimously passed

the following Motion commemorating the Armenian Genocide,

 moved by Independent Councillor Mr Sarkis Yedelian:

That this Council:

(1)    acknowledges  this year as marking the occasion of the 90th anniversary commemoration of the Genocide of the Armenians perpetrated  by the then Ottoman Government between the years 1915-1922;

(2)    joins with the Armenian community of Ryde in  honouring the memory of  the 1.5 million men, women and children who died in  the first genocide of  the twentieth century;

(3)    recognises 24 April every year as a day of  remembrance of the Armenian genocide;

(4)    condemns  the genocide of the Armenians and all other acts of genocide committed as the  ultimate act of racial, religious and cultural intolerance;

(5)    calls on the Commonwealth Government to  officially condemn:

(i)   the  genocide of the Armenians

(ii)  any attempt to deny such crimes against humanity.

 On April 24 of this year, on the eve of the 90th anniversary of the ANZAC landings, Armenians the world over, including the many thousands of Armenian-Australians living in Ryde, will commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Armenian genocide. In 1915, and in anticipation of the Allied invasion, the Ottoman Empire set in motion a plan to exterminate the entire Christian Armenian population living on their ancestral lands of Eastern Anatolia, part of what is today the Republic of Turkey. This state-sponsored program resulted in the brutal extermination of some 1.5 million Armenian men, women and children.

Clr Yedelian said - ”As the first Australian Councillor of Armenian ancestry, and a son of survivor of the Armenian Genocide, I feel honoured to have moved this Motion.  The importance of this Commemorative Motion, however, goes beyond the Armenian-Australian Community, many thousands of who call the City of Ryde home.”

 “In stark contrast to post-Nazi Germany which has acknowledged and sought to atone for the crimes of the Nazi regime, successive Turkish governments have refused to come to terms with their own history.  The “industry of genocide denial” by successive Turkish States, has set a very dangerous precedent, which has already been relied upon by at least one mass murderer, Hitler, for his genocidal crimes, and which cannot be left without redress” Yedelian added.

 As the City of Ryde has one of the largest and growing Armenian-Australian constituencies, it fitting that Ryde Council has added its name to the growing list of multi-national, national, state/provisional and municipal legislative bodies (including the NSW Parliament) that have commemorated and reaffirmed the historical truth of the Armenian Genocide, and which have provided a resounding response to Hitler’s self-justifying question in 1939 before he embarked on his genocidal deeds during World War II – "Who remembers now the destruction of the Armenians?"

 As with a similar motion passed unanimously by the NSW Parliament in 1997, Ryde Council Motion also calls on the Federal Parliament to add its voice to this important call.

April 5, 2005

  ANZAC COVE DESTRUCTION Continues

  On  March 8, 2005,  Ryde Council considered concerns expressed by Independent Councillor  Sarkis Yedelian  regarding reports that human remains from the Gallipoli Conflict are believed to have been dug up and possibly destroyed by local workers. Ryde Council believes that every possible action should be taken to ensure that those who gave their lives protecting our Country are given the highest respect and that the Federal Government must ensure that any remains discovered are properly maintained and preserved during the construction works.  (See Attached press release).

Accordingly Council resolved that Ryde Council:

1) Join with the Returned Services League (RSL) in urging the Federal Government to immediately ensure the protection of World War I graves at Gallipoli - which are threatened from a road widening project that could have possible impact on human remains at Anzac Cove.

 (2)  Call on the Federal Government and the Department of Veterans Affairs to ensure any remains discovered are properly maintained and preserved during the construction.

 On 17 March 2005, Council wrote to The Honourable John Howard, MP Member for Bennelong, Prime Minister of Australia with its concern.

Further proof is coming out that ANZAC Cove is in danger of destruction. Irreversible damage can be made if urgent action is not taken by our Federal Government.

On 2nd April 2005, a letter and pphotos sent to Federal MPs by a former Australian Army officer show the destruction caused by the Government’s road works at Anzac Cove (photos attached).

Mr. Jeff Cleverly, who served in the Australian Army for a decade, says “the work has been excessive and largely inappropriate”.

"In fact, the extent of this work runs counter to the original report commissioned by the Turkish Government in 1997, which recommended that it was essential to keep the integrity of the ANZAC area."

“The 20 meter widening of the road inside ANZAC Cove seems more than the once-a-year heavy demand requires and it has not addressed the real problem, which is the erosion on the beach side of the road.”

The Australian Government requested the destructive road works while it was pursuing National Heritage Listing for Anzac Cove.

The photos show “spoil from the road works being dumped into Anzac Cove, removing large portions of the beach”.  The photos also confirm previous reports that Anzac Cove now looks like an open cut mine.

Mr. Cleverly is not alone in his condemnation of the road works. Many other leading experts on Gallipoli share his concern.

Mr Cleverly has also raised concerns about another road from Lone Pine to Chunuk Bair (letter to MPs and map attached).

All calls to Federal Government seem being ignored.

 YEDELIAN CALLS FOR HALT ON CONSTRUCTION AT ANZAC COVE

 Independent Councillor for Ryde, Mr Sarkis Yedelian today urged the Federal Government to put a halt to the widening of a road at Anzac Cove which threatens possible human remains.

Clr Yedelian made the call as a matter of urgency at tonight’s Council meeting, following discussions with local Ryde RSL Members.

The issue surrounds a 20 metre-wide road, which has already covered part of the beach at Gallipoli.

There are reports that human remains from the Gallipoli conflict are believed to have been dug up and possibly destroyed by local workers.

“This is a matter of grave concern, for all Australians,” Clr Yedelian said.

“This year is also a special year with the 90th anniversary of the landing of Gallipoli.

“We must do all we can to ensure those who gave their lives protecting our country are given the highest respect,” Clr Yedelian said.

Mr Yedelian said the Federal Government must ensure any remains discovered are properly maintained and preserved during the construction.

Each year more than 10,000 Australians travel there for the ANZAC dawn service.
